This is an exciting opportunity to join Molly Scott Cato MEP’s small and dynamic team in the Brussels office. We are looking for an Accredited Parliamentary Assistant to support both the running of the office and Molly’s work in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.

We are seeking a professional, confident and adaptable person, with considerable attention to detail. With excellent oral and written communication skills, you will be able to operate at a high level, working on varied policy issues but with particular focus on economic and monetary policy. Committee work requires the ability to pick up complex policy briefs quickly.

This diverse and demanding post will require excellent time management skills, and an ability to prioritise and work efficiently, with an always personable manner. Due to the cross-cutting nature of the work, it is essential that you can work well in a team, taking a problem-solving and adaptable approach when working alongside others.

Reports to: Molly Scott Cato’s Chef de Cabinet
Contract: One year contract, with potential to be renewed for the remainder of the parliamentary mandate, or until the end of the UK’s membership of the EU, whichever is the sooner
Salary: According to grade. Starting on Parliamentary Assistant Grade 2
Hours: 35 hours per week
Specialist policy areas: EU economic and monetary policy

Main tasks:

  • Oversight of constituency email and intern’s work responding to these emails. Answering e-mails from constituents with parliamentary/legislative focus.
  • Providing support for Molly in her work in the ECON Committee, in particular through drafting briefings in advance of ECON-related meetings. Research into EU policy related to economics and monetary policy
  • Liaising with other members of Green Economy Team. Cooperating in the organisation of meetings
  • Contributing to press releases and website content related to ECON committee work, in cooperation with Molly’s media officer.
  • Managing Molly’s inbox. Assist in the running of Molly’s Brussels office eg by taking phone calls, filing meeting requests.
  • Undertaking the organisation of events and visitors groups. Assistance in meetings as required.
  • Attending meetings of TTIP working group, and other trade-related work

Person Specification

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of EU institutions, particularly the European Parliament;
  • Knowledge of economics and finance (or willingness to learn);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to analyse and convey complex information succinctly;
  • Experience of drafting policy briefings;
  • Excellent organisational skills, with a problem-solving attitude;
  • Ability to prioritise work, co-ordinating multiple projects to deadlines;
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently;
  • Political sensitivity and a sense of diplomacy;
  • Thorough knowledge of, and commitment to, Green politics (applicants must not belong to another political party);
  • Good computer skills (word processing, email, Internet).

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of policy and advocacy in economics and finance, or at least one of Molly’s key work areas (please see:  Molly’s work as an MEP);
  • Ability to use initiative to identifying strategic issues and opportunities;
  • Previous experience of the workings of the European Parliament;
  • Familiarity with social media;
  • French and/or other European Language skills an advantage.
