Rishi Sunak has appointed his first cabinet as Prime Minister.
This senior ministerial team – the third Cabinet since the summer – takes over a country in disarray: the escalating cost of living crisis, worsened by September’s ‘mini budget’, strikes across public services, backlogs in everything from surgery to driving tests; and heightened international tensions. Every department will be under pressure to reset priorities, cut spending and deliver change quickly.
The new Prime Minister has stated that he will re-establish key 2019 manifesto commitments, which gives a steer to policy priorities in the NHS, education, policing, immigration and levelling up. With local elections taking place next year and a general election pencilled in for 2024, Conservative MPs will be watching closely to see how well the new administration can close the gap on Labour.
In the early days of this new Cabinet, industry needs to show itself as a productive partner who can work alongside Departments to tackle the big problems faced by the country. They will look for high impact, well-packaged ideas that align with Government priorities and create early wins.
