Parliament has prorogued and the sun is shining in SW1. Many MPs will welcome an extra three weeks in their constituencies, campaigning for the European and local elections taking place on 22 May.

For the Government though, the coming weeks will be filled with horse-trading between the Coalition partners as the legislative agenda for the final session of this Parliament is agreed.

When Her Majesty reads out the Queen’s Speech on Wednesday 4 June, it will be her fourth and final one of this Parliament. The Government has in recent months faced accusations from the Opposition of being zombie-like, light on ideas and running out of steam. With the final session running for less than ten months before Parliament is dissolved on 30 March 2015, the Government will be keen to demonstrate it is still fulfilling the Coalition Agreement, whilst seeking to set out fault-lines on key issues in advance of the General Election.

Although we expect the unity of the Coalition parties to be sustained, it is anticipated that the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats will seek points of substantive differentiation in the run-up to Thursday 7 May 2015.

This briefing sets out some of the anticipated legislative agenda for the final parliamentary session, and can be downloaded on their website.
