Former Justice Minister and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Simon Hughes, has been appointed as Head of Public Affairs at The Open University. Sir Simon officially took up the full-time post yesterday (Monday 16th February), in a one-year maternity cover role for Laura Burley.

The former Bermondsey MP will lead the university’s three-person strong public affairs team, which forms part of the Communications Unit. He will support the Vice-Chancellor, Peter Horrocks, and report into the university’s Director of Communications, Lucian Hudson.

Director of External Engagement, Steve Hill, said: “Part-time study has an important role to play in our country in terms of skills, social mobility and economic prosperity. Effective engagement with the UK Government and other key influencers is therefore vital to ensure these benefits are fully realised. Simon brings with him a wealth of relevant experience and insight, as well as sharing our commitment to social mobility and opening up access to education.”
