At Cratus Group, we believe community engagement isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about real communication and collaborate with all voices, especially those often unheard.

Those most in need of housing and infrastructure—marginalised communities, lower-income families, and those in inadequate housing—are often drowned out by louder voices opposing development.

While concerns about change and impacts are valid, the imbalance in engagement skews decisions against those who would benefit most. This is why it’s crucial that we, along with other agencies and developers, work together to advocate for both building support and addressing local concerns.

Our specialised Community Engagement and Placemaking team is dedicated to reaching these groups, not because they are unreachable, but because traditional methods fail to meet them where they are.

Let’s shift the narrative

Inclusive engagement (and Inclusive Growth) requires moving beyond outdated methods like town hall meetings and static surveys. Our dedicated team takes engagement directly to local people—through community hubs, independent cafes, and digital platforms—collaborating with grassroots organisations and local leaders who already have trust within their communities ensuring  engagement is meaningful and impactful.

But why does this matter?

The scale of housing crisis and urgent need for affordable housing is often overshadowed by opposition from those seeking to preserve the status quo. While all development should be well considered, and built to high quality, the imbalance in whose voices are heard must be addressed. Those struggling with housing insecurity have valuable insights that can shape better-designed, more inclusive developments.

At Cratus Group, alongside fellow communication and engagement agencies, we are committed to elevating these voices—ensuring they influence decisions on housing, green spaces, transport, and community infrastructure. This isn’t just about feedback; it’s about trust. By demonstrating that their input directly informs planning, we foster a sense of ownership and build stronger communities.

Moving Forward Together

The future of sustainable development lies in collaboration. No single agency, developer, or local authority can do it alone. It’s down to all of us to work together to ensure engagement is truly inclusive. By redefining traditional approaches and prioritising underrepresented voices, we can create places that serve everyone—not just the vocal minority. We at Cratus Group are committed to making that happen.
