The Digital Democracy Commission will hold a consultation workshop with The City of London Guild of Public Relations Practitioners and the Public Relations Consultants Association (PRCA) on 24th November.

The Commission, launched by the Rt Hon John Bercow MP at the end of 2013, will seek the views of the PR industry on how MPs and Parliament need to communicate and engage in the digital age. The event is part of evidence gathering by the Commission as it prepares for the publication of recommendations in early 2015.

The Digital Democracy Commission is exploring issues that include how to encourage citizens to engage with democracy, how to facilitate dialogue among citizens and how the work and performance of government are scrutinised. Members of the Guild of Public Relations Practitioners, the PRCA as well as the Commission are invited to join the discussion to provide their own views.

Francis Ingham, PRCA Director General, said: “It is gratifying that the Digital Democracy Commission values the insights of the PR industry to guide its efforts to enhance engagement between politicians and the public. There is a huge job to be done here and it won’t be fixed overnight, but this consultation is a valuable step in the right direction.”

Jonathan Chandler, Deputy Master of The PR Guild, said: “The Commission is keen to gather participants from across the spectrum of the public relations and public affairs community to inform the report.

"We will look, for example, at how MPs make better use of the internet and social media to represent their constituents and how constituents can use these tools to ensure they are being represented in the way they wish."

The event will be hosted by Microsoft in Whitechapel and will take place on Monday 24th November between 8.30am and 11am. For further information and to register, please click here
